Hawaii, Day 45 - Ka'ena Point

Hawaii, Day 45

This gallery was taken mostly from the very tip of Ka'ena Point. Ka'ena Point is the tip of island where the North Shore meets the leeward coast. This area is known for its waves, which, during the windy season, average 10m (33ft), and the record-setting wave at the point was 30m (96ft). The waves were about 1-1.5m (3-5ft) when we were there. In order to get to the point, you have to hike from the end of Farrington Hwy down the seashore to the dunes, over the dunes, and then down to the coast. It's about a 6.5 mile round trip, in the sun and sand. Suffice it to say, we were dead by the time we got home. We intend to return to the point very soon to hike into the mountians, because they looked very accessible and I think I can get some very nice shots of the Island from a higher vantage point.

For this shoot, most of the pictures are the waves crashing on the rocks. It was so incredible to see the waves hitting the rocks, and the splashes going 20-30ft into the air. I really wanted to capture the power of the waves on the rocks. I actually ended up capturing more than I bargained for, as I brought a little bit of the ocean home with me in my camera bag. But everything turned out okay in the end.
